Cho Oyu é a sexta montanha mais alta do mundo.
Está localizada na cordilheira do Himalaia, a 20 km a oeste do monte Everest.
o nome significa " Deusa Mãe Turquesa" no idioma tibetano.
O Cho Oyu foi escalado pela primeira vez em 19 de Outubro de 1954, através do lado noroeste, por Herbert Tichy, Joseph Joechler e Pasang Dawa Lama, participantes de uma expedição austríaca. A primeira tentativa de escalada foi em em 1952, por uma expedição conduzida por Eric Shipton, mas as dificuldades técnicas em gelo acima de 6.650 m provaram ser além de suas habilidades.
Esta montanha é considerada a menos difícil de se escalar entre todas as montanhas com mais de 8000 metros.
O Cho Oyu foi o quinto pico com mais de 8000 m a ser escalado, após o Annapurna em Junho de 1950, o Monte Everest em maio de 1953, o Nanga Parbat em Julho de 1953 e o K2 em Julho de 1954.

Cronologia :
1952:
Reconhecimento da face Noroeste do Cho Oyu's por Edmund Hillary.

1954:
A small Austrian expedition, under the leadership of Herbert Tichy, make a spectacular first ascent without oxygen on the Northwest face. This new style of climbing big mountains with alpine techniques rewrote mountaineering history.

1958:
Second ascent by an Indian expedition. Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama, who was part of the first ascent, reached the peak for the second time. First death on Cho Oyu.

1959:
Four member of an expedition are killed in an avalanche during a failed international women's expedition.

1964:
Controversial third ascent by a German expedition. No proof of reaching the summit. Two mountaineers die in Camp 4 of exhaustion at 7600 m (25,000 foot) height.

1978:
The Austrian alpinists, Koblmuller and Furtner, succeeds in a spectacular ascent of the extremely difficult and dangerous southeast face.

1983:
Reinhold Messner succeeds on his fourth attempt.

1985:
First winter ascent of the South buttress by a Polish expedition.
The South Buttress is the most difficult route on Cho Oyu to be completed successfully.
